Applied is not the same as approved

A pending renewal does not restore the right to work. California is the clearest case. A guard may work pending delivery of the renewed card only after BSIS has renewed the registration (§7583.20(d)). Arizona tells employers that a photocopy of a card is not proof of a valid registration and that DPS does not email confirmations of pending applications. Employers check the DPS portal instead (AZ DPS FAQ).

What an employer can do when a card expires

  1. Take the officer off the post on the expiration date, unless the state's own rule says otherwise.
  2. Check the official lookup rather than the card: California BSIS, Florida FDACS, Illinois IDFPR, New Jersey NJSP, Arizona DPS.
  3. Find the late window in the table and the state guide, and file before it closes.
  4. Keep a record of the date the officer was removed and the date the new card was verified.

Frequently asked questions

Does a guard card expire?

Yes. Every state in the table sets an expiration date, and it is usually printed on the card.

How long is a guard card good for?

It ranges from one year for an armed New Jersey officer to five years in Nevada. Two years is the most common term.

My guard card expired. What should I do?

Stop working the post, confirm your state's late renewal window in the table, and renew or reapply through the regulator.

How do I renew an expired security license?

Where a late window exists, such as 60 days in California, you renew with a late fee. Past it, you file a new application. The state guides give the steps.
